چکیده

In a very interesting study, Kiwanuka et al. [1] report significant differences in the rates of transmission associated with different HIV-1 subtypes in Rakai, Uganda. Controlling for other factors, they find the transmission rate of subtype A to be nearly double that of subtype D. The authors suggest that differential transmission rates among subtypes are important for: (i) HIV vaccine development and testing, (ii) understanding the dynamics of HIV-1 epidemics in different geographical regions and (iii) projections of the pandemic.

Forecasting the future of HIV epidemics: the impact of antiretroviral therapies & imperfect vaccines.

Mathematical models can be used as health policy tools and predictive tools. Here we review how mathematical models have been used both to predict the consequences of specific epidemic control strategies and to design epidemic control strategies. We review how models have been used to evaluate the potential impact on HIV epidemics of (i) combination antiretroviral therapies (ART) and (ii) imper...

Immunogenicity of a New HIV-1 DNA Construct in a BALB/c Mouse Model

Background: Cell mediated immunity, especially cytotoxic T cell responses against HIV-1 infection, plays a critical role in controlling viral replication and disease progres-sion. DNA vaccine is a novel technology which is known to stimulate strong cellular immune responses. Many DNA vaccines have been tested for HIV infection but there is still no effective vaccine against this infection. Cons...

Challenges in the Design of a T Cell Vaccine in the Context of HIV-1 Diversity

The extraordinary variability of HIV-1 poses a major obstacle to vaccine development. The effectiveness of a vaccine is likely to vary dramatically in different populations infected with different HIV-1 subtypes, unless innovative vaccine immunogens are developed to protect against the range of HIV-1 diversity. Immunogen design for stimulating neutralizing antibody responses focuses on "breadth...

Does BCG vaccine induced trained immunity provide cross-protection against COVID-19?

During the global COVID-19 pandemic, the rate of mortality and morbidity was fairly low in Pakistan compared to western countries. Bacille Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccination provides cross-protection for a broad range of related and unrelated pathogens. This protection is attributed to the recognition of broadly cross-reactive Pathogen-Associated Molecular Pattern (PAMPS) like molecules. We inve...

An HIV-1 Mini Vaccine Induced Long-lived Cellular and Humoral Immune Responses

Memory formation is the most important aspect of a vaccine which can guarantee long-lasting immunity and protection. The main aim of the present study was to evaluate the memory immune responses after immunization with a mini vaccine. Mice were immunized with human immunodeficiency virus-1 P24-Nef fusion peptide and then cellular and humoral immune responses were evaluated. In order to determin...
